Discipline – Aerial Straps
What is Aerial Straps?
Straps is a discipline belonging to the category of aerial acrobatics. A piece of equipment called straps is rigged up in the ceiling, and the artist performs their circus art while hanging.
The straps consist of two bands resembling tension straps hanging from a point in the ceiling. At the bottom of the straps, there is a loop that the artist uses as a handle. Using strength, the artist winds themselves up in the straps and assumes static positions that appear impossible to the naked eye. The artist utilizes flexibility and dynamic swings to impress the audience. Straps can also be practised in duos.
What is needed for Straps?
- Ceiling height of at least 5 meters but ideally 8–10 meters.
- Floor area of at least 3 x 3 meters but preferably larger, up to 8 x 8 meters.
- The attachment point in the ceiling has a minimum breaking strength (MBS) of 26kN or two ceiling points at 40kN each and one-floor point at 26kN.
- A counterweight system or motor/winches may be necessary if the act requires variations in height (riggers required).
